Getting a Lab Requisition Has Never Been Easier
Many people don’t realise you can get a lab requisition online in BC. Most labs (including LifeLabs and your local hospital outpatient lab) require a doctor’s order before they’ll see you. Walk In’s BC-licensed online doctors can assess your concern over a quick telehealth appointment and issue the requisition form you need.
Our team of online doctors can issue an online lab requisition for a wide range of common tests. From a general laboratory requisition to specific orders for urine, blood, stool, swab, or STI samples, we’ve got you covered.
How to Get a Lab Requisition Online in BC
Walk In makes it straightforward to get a lab requisition without an in-person visit. Here’s how it works:
- Step 1: Book a virtual appointment. Click Book Now to register and select an appointment time that works for you.
- Step 2: Speak with a licensed BC doctor. During your telehealth visit, our online doctor will review your symptoms, ask about your medical history, and decide whether a lab test is medically appropriate.
- Step 3: Receive your requisition. We’ll either email the requisition form directly to you or send it to your chosen lab. From there, you can book your appointment at LifeLabs, Valley Medical Laboratories in the Okanagan, your local hospital outpatient lab, or another BC community lab.
What Lab Forms Can Walk In Provide?
Walk In’s online doctors can order lab work for a wide range of common health and medical concerns. Whether you’re managing symptoms, screening for an infection, or checking on an ongoing condition, we can issue a lab requisition form for:
- Urine tests — UTIs, kidney function checks, and STI screening through urinalysis or urine cultures.
- Stool tests — FIT testing for colon cancer screening, stool cultures, and parasite testing.
- Swab tests — Strep throat, vaginal swabs for yeast or BV, STI swabs, and wound swabs for skin infections.
- Other specimen tests — Fungal scrapings, certain breath tests like H. pylori, and other less common requisitions on request.
- Blood tests — CBC, thyroid panels, iron, liver function, and more blood work.
Why Get a Lab Requisition Through Walk In?
Getting a lab requisition shouldn’t mean taking a day off work to sit in a packed waiting room. Walk In operates like a traditional walk in clinic, but delivered online, so you can see a BC-licensed doctor from home.
Most of our visits are covered by MSP, so there’s usually no out-of-pocket cost for your appointment. If you don’t have a regular family doctor who can review your lab results once they are available, you can book a follow-up appointment and we’ll gladly go through them with you.
FAQs About Lab Requisitions in BC
Still have questions about getting a lab requisition online in BC? Find answers to the most common ones below, including what a lab requisition is, how long it’s valid, and where you can use it.
What is a lab requisition?
A lab requisition is an official order from a doctor that allows you to access lab testing services. It’s a document that tells the lab which tests your doctor has ordered and authorises them to collect the samples.
How long is a lab requisition valid for in BC?
Lab requisitions in BC are typically valid for six months from the date they’re issued, though some specialised tests may have shorter validity periods. If your requisition expires before you’ve used it, you’ll need to book another telehealth appointment to have a new one issued.
Can I book a lab appointment online in BC?
Yes — LifeLabs, Fraser Health, and most major BC lab providers offer lab online booking once you have a valid requisition. The requisition has to come first: without it, the lab can’t see you. Walk In gets you that requisition through a quick virtual appointment with a BC-licensed doctor, often the same day.
Where can I take my lab requisition?
You can take a Walk In lab requisition to most BC outpatient lab providers, including:
- LifeLabs (locations throughout BC)
- Valley Medical Laboratories (Okanagan)
- Hospital outpatient labs operated by Fraser Health, Vancouver Coastal Health, Island Health, Interior Health, and Northern Health
What’s the difference between a lab requisition and a blood test?
Blood tests are technically a type of lab test, but because they’re so common, we cover them on a separate page. This page focuses on other lab tests — urine, stool, swabs, and STI screening. If you specifically need blood work, visit our Blood Tests page for more details.
What lab tests are not available through a virtual appointment?
Some tests require in-person collection or specialist involvement and aren’t suitable for a virtual walk in clinic. These include Pap smears (which require an in-person pelvic exam), ECGs and other cardiac tests (which need equipment), and biopsies (which are usually performed by a specialist). If you have a specific test in mind and aren’t sure whether it can be ordered virtually, our doctors can advise during your appointment.
Are lab tests covered by MSP?
Lab tests ordered for a valid medical reason are typically covered under MSP. General “check-up” testing usually isn’t covered, so those tests would be billed privately at the lab. Your telehealth appointment with a Walk In doctor is covered by MSP for insured BC residents.
