How an Online Doctor Can Help With Weight Management

Answers to your questions and practical next steps.

Your Questions

Review weight changes, medical history, medicines, eating patterns, activity and sleep. The discussion can focus on health concerns and what you would like to improve.

Next Steps

Options may include practical changes, dietitian support, treatment of contributing conditions or medication when appropriate. Continuing monitoring is important for a sustainable care plan.

Timely Advice

Weight loss without trying, persistent vomiting or a rapid unexplained change needs medical assessment. Seek urgent care for severe weakness, dehydration or other serious symptoms rather than waiting for a weight-management visit.

Understanding Weight Management

Weight is influenced by several biological, medical and everyday factors. A useful assessment looks at health and function as well as weight. Goals should be individual, achievable and discussed without assuming that one approach is right for everyone.

Options and Next Steps

Care may involve nutrition, activity, behavioural support and, for some people, medication or specialist services. Treatment eligibility and safety need assessment. A focused visit can address a concern, while longer-term management requires an appropriate plan for follow-up.

Your Appointment in Three Steps

Step 1 Book Your Visit

Choose a service and review the eligible location and care requirements before selecting an available appointment.

Step 2 Speak With a Doctor

Connect by phone or video. Your doctor may need video or an in-person assessment to understand your concern.

Questions About Weight Management

What Can a Physician Assess Beyond My Weight or BMI?

A useful assessment considers weight history, medical conditions, medications, sleep, eating patterns, physical function and what you want to improve. A weight measurement alone does not explain why weight changed or which treatment would be appropriate.

A physician can review possible contributors and whether targeted tests or other support would help. Bring previous approaches and their effects, including any history of restrictive eating or weight-related distress. Goals can include mobility, energy or managing a related health condition as well as a change in weight.

How Is Suitability for Weight-Management Medication Decided?

A physician considers clinical need, expected benefit, medical history, other medicines and whether appropriate monitoring can be arranged. Medication can be one part of a broader plan; different options have different precautions and side effects. Pregnancy plans and certain health conditions can affect suitability.

The discussion should cover what progress to expect, how side effects will be handled and who will provide follow-up. Bring details of any current or previous weight-management treatment. A prescription should follow that assessment rather than be assumed from the appointment topic.

What If Previous Weight-Loss Attempts Have Not Been Sustainable?

That history is useful information, not a reason to repeat the same plan more strictly. A physician can review what made previous approaches difficult, including side effects, hunger, work demands, cost, sleep or another health issue. Highly restrictive plans may be hard to sustain and may not fit your health needs.

The next step may involve more realistic goals, dietitian support, treatment of contributing conditions or a discussion of medication when appropriate. Agree on how progress will be reviewed using meaningful health and function measures, not only the scale.
