Vaginitis describes inflammation or irritation in and around the vagina. Yeast is one possible cause, but bacterial changes, some STIs, irritants and hormonal changes can cause similar symptoms. Appearance or discharge alone may not establish the diagnosis.

How Can I Tell a Yeast Infection From Bacterial Vaginosis or Another Cause?
Itching, discharge, odour and irritation overlap between several conditions. Yeast, bacterial vaginosis, STIs and irritation from products can require very different treatment, so symptoms alone do not always identify the cause. A first episode or symptoms that differ from your usual pattern are good reasons to seek assessment.
A physician can review discharge changes, pain, exposures and previous treatments to decide whether testing or an examination would help. Mention pregnancy, bleeding, pelvic pain or fever, because these can change the urgency and approach.
Why Do Symptoms Return After I Use an Over-the-Counter Yeast Treatment?
Symptoms may return because yeast was not the original cause, the infection needs a different approach, or another contributing factor has not been addressed. Repeatedly treating every episode as yeast can delay a clearer diagnosis and may itself irritate sensitive skin.
A physician can review the exact product, how it was used and how long any improvement lasted. Swabs or another assessment may be useful before further treatment, especially with recurrent symptoms, unusual discharge, pain or a new sexual exposure.
Should I Avoid Sex or Change My Hygiene Products While Symptoms Are Being Assessed?
If sex is painful or worsens irritation, pausing can help prevent further discomfort while the cause is assessed. If an STI is possible, ask about testing and precautions before resuming sexual contact. Partner treatment depends on the diagnosis; it is not the same for every cause of vaginitis.
Avoid douching and fragranced vaginal products, which can worsen irritation. A physician can suggest care that fits the suspected cause and explain whether any prescribed cream affects condoms or other barrier methods.
