How an Online Doctor Can Help With Stomach Flu

Assessment, care options and when to seek help.

Assessment

Review symptoms, sick contacts, food exposures and hydration. A physician can assess whether a short-lived intestinal infection is likely or whether another cause needs investigation.

Care Options

Replacing fluids and electrolytes is central to recovery. A physician can advise on suitable oral rehydration and whether additional treatment is needed.

When to Act

Seek prompt care for blood in stools, persistent vomiting, severe pain or dehydration. Go to emergency for confusion, collapse or severe deterioration. Older adults and people with reduced immunity need earlier advice.

Understanding Stomach Flu

The term stomach flu usually refers to viral gastroenteritis, an intestinal infection. It is not influenza. The illness often causes watery diarrhea, cramps and vomiting, sometimes with fever.

Care and Treatment

Many people recover with fluids and gradual return to their usual food as tolerated. Antibiotics do not treat the virus. Wash hands with soap and water and carefully clean contaminated surfaces to reduce spread.

Questions About Stomach Flu

Is Stomach Flu the Same as Influenza or Food Poisoning?

No. The name usually refers to gastroenteritis, an illness causing vomiting or diarrhea, rather than influenza, which mainly affects the respiratory tract. Gastroenteritis can spread between people or come from contaminated food, so the terms can overlap with some causes of food poisoning.

The practical priorities are hydration, symptom severity and preventing spread. A physician can review exposures and the illness pattern if symptoms are unusual, persistent or severe rather than relying on the label stomach flu to explain every episode.

What Should I Eat and Drink While Recovering From Gastroenteritis?

Start with small, frequent amounts of fluid if vomiting makes drinking difficult. An oral rehydration solution can help replace water and salts when losses are significant. A prolonged fast is generally unnecessary; as appetite returns, resume food as tolerated rather than forcing a rigid diet.

Ask for advice if you have diabetes, kidney disease or medicines that may need attention during dehydration. Little urine, significant dizziness or inability to keep fluids down suggests that self-care may not be enough.

How Can I Avoid Passing Gastroenteritis to Other People?

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, particularly after using the toilet and before handling food. Avoid preparing food for others while you are ill, and clean shared bathroom and frequently touched surfaces carefully. Some infections remain contagious after symptoms improve.

Return-to-work advice can differ for food handlers, healthcare workers and people caring for vulnerable individuals. A physician can explain what applies to your situation and whether testing or additional precautions are needed; feeling a little better is not the only consideration.
