Can a Physician Tell Whether I Have Strep Throat Without a Test?
Symptoms can suggest strep, but viral infections and other causes can look similar. Fever, swollen glands, cough and other features help determine whether a throat test is appropriate; a photograph of the throat alone is not a reliable substitute.
A physician can assess the illness pattern and help arrange testing when indicated. Antibiotics are used for appropriate bacterial infections, not every painful throat. Mention exposure to strep, previous results and any difficulty swallowing or opening your mouth.
What Can Help the Pain While a Sore Throat Settles?
Fluids, soothing warm or cool drinks and a suitable pain-relief medicine can improve comfort while the cause is assessed or the illness resolves. A pharmacist can check whether a product fits your other medicines and medical conditions. Avoid combining products with the same active ingredient.
Pain severe enough to prevent drinking needs assessment. Difficulty breathing, drooling, inability to swallow saliva or marked swelling is more urgent than a routine sore throat and should not wait for a standard booking.
Why Does My Sore Throat Keep Returning?
Recurring throat discomfort can come from repeated infections, post-nasal drainage, reflux, smoke or other irritation. The pattern helps distinguish these possibilities: note whether symptoms occur with colds, after meals, on waking or around a particular exposure.
A physician can review the history and whether testing, examination or referral would help. A persistent unexplained lump, ongoing hoarseness, difficulty swallowing or symptoms mainly on one side should be mentioned rather than assumed to be another ordinary throat infection.
