How an Online Doctor Can Help With Sleep Apnea

A focused review of symptoms, treatment and next steps.

Health Review

Review sleep symptoms, daytime alertness and observations from a partner. A physician can consider whether a sleep study or other assessment is needed.

Care Options

If sleep apnea is confirmed, treatment depends on its type and severity. Options may include CPAP or other interventions arranged through appropriate ongoing care.

When to Act

Do not drive or operate machinery if you are dangerously sleepy. Seek prompt advice about impaired alertness. Breathing difficulty while awake, chest pain or inability to wake someone requires emergency help.

Discuss Sleep Apnea With a Physician

Walk In connects eligible patients in its service areas with BC-licensed physicians for phone or video appointments. The physicians provide the medical care.

MSP-covered visits are free for eligible patients.

Understanding Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea involves repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type. Snoring alone does not establish the diagnosis, and some people are unaware of breathing pauses.

Care and Treatment

A sleep study helps assess the problem. A physician can explain results and treatment concerns, while device setup and continuing follow-up may involve a sleep-care team. Report difficulty tolerating an existing treatment.

Questions About Sleep Apnea

How Do I Know Whether Snoring Could Be Sleep Apnea?

Snoring alone does not confirm sleep apnea, but witnessed pauses in breathing, waking gasping, unrefreshing sleep and significant daytime sleepiness increase concern. High blood pressure and some other health conditions can also be relevant. A partner's observations are often useful.

A physician can review the symptoms and decide whether sleep testing or referral is appropriate. Mention sleepiness while driving or doing safety-sensitive work. Do not drive when sleepy; that risk needs attention while an assessment is being arranged.

What If I Cannot Tolerate My CPAP Mask or Pressure?

Mask leaks, dryness, nasal congestion, discomfort and pressure concerns can make CPAP difficult to use, but the solution depends on the specific problem. Describe when it happens and whether you have any usage or treatment report from the device.

A physician can review related health issues and help identify when the sleep-care team or equipment provider should reassess the setup. Avoid changing pressure settings without appropriate advice. A practical troubleshooting plan may be more helpful than abandoning treatment after an uncomfortable trial.

Why Am I Still Tired Even Though I Use CPAP?

Persistent tiredness can reflect incomplete treatment, mask leaks, insufficient sleep, medications or another health condition. Using the device does not automatically show that sleep apnea is fully controlled throughout the night. Your actual usage and available treatment data help put symptoms in context.

A physician can review the pattern and whether further input from your sleep-care clinician is needed. Bring information about sleep duration, shift work, alcohol or sedating medicines, and any change in symptoms rather than assuming that increasing pressure is the answer.
