How Is a Bacterial Sinus Infection Different From a Cold?
Sinus pressure, congestion and coloured mucus often occur with a viral cold and do not by themselves establish a bacterial infection. The duration and pattern are more useful, including symptoms that persist without improvement, are unusually severe or worsen again after starting to improve.
A physician can review those features, allergy symptoms and your medical history to decide whether antibiotics or another treatment would help. Explain the timeline rather than focusing only on mucus colour or where the pressure is felt.
What Can Help Sinus Symptoms Besides Antibiotics?
Treatment may focus on nasal inflammation, allergy symptoms and comfort while the illness settles. Depending on your history, a clinician may discuss saline products or a suitable nasal spray. Decongestants have precautions and are not appropriate for everyone or for indefinite use.
