Understanding Nausea and Vomiting
Nausea is the feeling that you may vomit. It can occur with infections, migraine, pregnancy, medicine effects or other conditions. Vomiting is a symptom to assess in context rather than a diagnosis on its own.
Care and Treatment
Small, frequent sips may be easier to tolerate. A physician will consider what is causing symptoms before choosing medicine. Severe dehydration may need intravenous fluids and an in-person assessment.

Questions About Nausea and Vomiting
Could My Medication Be Causing Nausea or Vomiting?
Yes. Nausea can follow a new medicine, a dose change or an interaction, but it should not automatically be blamed on medication when another illness may be present. The timing in relation to doses, food and other symptoms is useful.
A physician or pharmacist can review prescription medicines, over-the-counter products and supplements and advise whether the treatment needs adjustment. Do not stop an important regular medicine without advice. If vomiting prevents you from keeping it down, ask how to manage missed doses rather than automatically repeating them.
When Does Vomiting Need Urgent Assessment?
Persistent inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, marked dizziness or confusion can indicate significant dehydration. Blood or material resembling coffee grounds in vomit, severe abdominal pain, a severe headache or a concerning neurological symptom also needs prompt attention.
Your medical history changes the urgency: diabetes, pregnancy and certain other conditions may require earlier assessment. Tell the clinician how often you are vomiting, whether you can drink and whether you have pain, fever, diarrhea or a possible medication-related cause.
What Should I Do About Nausea and Vomiting During Pregnancy?
Pregnancy-related nausea is common, but persistent vomiting that limits drinking, causes weight loss or interferes with daily function deserves assessment. A physician can review hydration, symptoms and whether treatment is appropriate rather than expecting you to simply endure it.
Mention the stage of pregnancy and all medicines or supplements before choosing an anti-nausea product. Abdominal pain, bleeding, faintness or significant deterioration should not be assumed to be ordinary morning sickness and may require urgent in-person assessment.
