How an Online Doctor Can Help With High Blood Pressure

A focused review of symptoms, treatment and next steps.

Health Review

Review repeated readings, how they were taken, current medicines and health history. Home monitoring or further assessment may help clarify the pattern.

Care Options

Care can include lifestyle measures and medication when appropriate. Targets and follow-up are individualized rather than based on one isolated reading.

When to Act

Call 911 for chest pain, new weakness, trouble speaking or severe breathlessness. Very high readings need prompt medical advice even without symptoms; do not simply wait for a routine appointment.

Discuss High Blood Pressure With a Physician

Walk In connects eligible patients in its service areas with BC-licensed physicians for phone or video appointments. The physicians provide the medical care.

MSP-covered visits are free for eligible patients.

Understanding High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure often causes no noticeable symptoms. Over time it can increase the risk of heart, brain and kidney problems. Reliable measurements are important both for diagnosis and for checking treatment.

Care and Treatment

A physician can review readings, medicine tolerance and monitoring needs. Continuing care may include blood tests and other checks. Do not stop blood pressure medicine just because you feel well.

Questions About High Blood Pressure

How Should I Take Home Blood Pressure Readings for a Review?

Use a validated upper-arm monitor with the correct cuff size if possible. Sit quietly with your back supported, feet on the floor and arm supported at heart level. Avoid talking during the reading, and record the results with the time and any relevant symptoms.

A physician can explain how often to measure and how many days of readings would be useful. Bring the device details and medication list. A consistent series taken correctly is more informative than repeatedly checking whenever you feel worried.

Does One High Reading Mean I Have Hypertension?

Usually a pattern of readings is needed to confirm persistent high blood pressure. Stress, pain, recent activity, caffeine and measurement technique can affect a result. A physician may use home readings or other monitoring to distinguish a temporary rise from sustained hypertension.

Very high readings still need prompt advice, particularly if repeated. Chest pain, severe breathlessness, weakness, confusion or a major vision change with a high reading needs emergency assessment. Do not use a lack of symptoms as proof that a high reading can be ignored.

Can I Stop Blood Pressure Medicine Once My Readings Improve?

Improved readings may show that the treatment is working rather than that it is no longer needed. Stopping or changing medication without a plan can allow blood pressure to rise again. If readings seem too low or you have dizziness or other side effects, discuss the pattern with a clinician.

A physician can review your home record, other medicines and any recent health changes to decide whether an adjustment is appropriate. Ask when to repeat readings and whether follow-up blood tests are needed for your particular treatment.
