Can I Assume Rectal Bleeding Is From Hemorrhoids?
No. Hemorrhoids are a common cause of bleeding, but fissures, inflammation and other bowel conditions can also cause it. New, persistent or changing bleeding should be assessed rather than diagnosed from the colour of the blood alone. Your age, bowel pattern, family history and screening history are relevant.
A physician can decide whether an examination, tests or referral would help. Heavy bleeding, faintness, black stools or bleeding with significant illness needs more urgent care than a routine hemorrhoid appointment.
What Can Help Hemorrhoids Besides a Cream?
Reducing straining and keeping stools comfortable to pass addresses an important contributor. Depending on your bowel pattern, that may involve fibre, fluids or a suitable constipation treatment. Avoid sitting on the toilet for long periods, and use gentle cleaning rather than repeated rubbing of irritated skin.
Creams may help symptoms temporarily but do not solve every cause of pain or bleeding. A physician can review persistent symptoms and distinguish hemorrhoids from a fissure or another problem that needs a different treatment.
When Might Hemorrhoids Need a Procedure or Referral?
Persistent bleeding, prolapse, recurrent troublesome symptoms or inadequate relief from appropriate conservative treatment can justify discussing other options. Procedures vary according to the type and severity of hemorrhoids; surgery is not the only possibility.
