How an Online Doctor Can Help With Hair Loss

A focused review of symptoms, treatment and next steps.

Health Review

Review onset, distribution, family history and recent illness or medicine changes. Photos can help an online doctor review the pattern. An in-person scalp examination may be needed to clarify the cause.

Care Options

Treatment should match the cause. A physician may consider targeted tests, medicine or specialist assessment rather than recommending the same product for every type of hair loss.

When to Act

Arrange prompt assessment for a painful, inflamed or rapidly changing scalp, or sudden patchy loss. Severe distress also deserves support; you do not need to wait until hair loss is extensive.

Discuss Hair Loss With a Physician

Walk In connects eligible patients in its service areas with BC-licensed physicians for phone or video appointments. The physicians provide the medical care.

MSP-covered visits are free for eligible patients.

Understanding Hair Loss

Hair loss can be gradual, patchy or a more general increase in shedding. Genetics, illness, nutritional deficiency, medicines and inflammatory conditions can contribute. Some forms are temporary; others need ongoing management.

Care and Treatment

Options depend on the diagnosis and your medical history. Discuss likely benefits, side effects, pregnancy considerations and how long a treatment trial should last. Hair regrowth cannot be guaranteed.

Questions About Hair Loss

How Is Increased Shedding Different From Pattern Hair Loss?

Diffuse shedding can follow illness, stress, childbirth, a medication change or a nutritional problem. Pattern hair loss tends to produce a more recognisable distribution over time. Patchy loss, scalp inflammation or scarring suggests other possibilities that may need a different assessment.

A physician can review when the change started, its distribution and what happened in the preceding months. Photographs showing progression, a medication list and information about scalp symptoms help determine whether targeted blood tests, examination or dermatology referral would be useful.

Will Vitamins or Supplements Help My Hair Grow Back?

Supplements are most useful when there is a relevant deficiency or a specific dietary problem. They do not reliably treat every cause of hair loss, and taking extra nutrients without a reason can cause problems. Some supplements, including biotin, can also interfere with particular laboratory tests.

A physician can review your diet, symptoms and any results before recommending tests or supplements. Bring product labels if you already take a hair supplement. The treatment plan should follow the likely cause rather than the claims on the packaging.

How Long Should I Try a Hair-Loss Treatment Before Deciding It Has Failed?

Hair growth changes slowly, so meaningful improvement often takes months rather than days or weeks. The expected timeline depends on the diagnosis and treatment, and some treatments need to be continued to maintain their benefit. Early shedding or scalp irritation should be discussed rather than interpreted without context.

A physician can set a realistic review interval and explain what improvement would look like. Consistent photographs under similar lighting are useful. A rapidly changing, painful or inflamed scalp warrants earlier review rather than waiting for a routine progress check.
