How an Online Doctor Can Help With Grief

Understanding your concerns, exploring support and knowing when to seek urgent help.

Understanding

Discuss the loss at a pace that feels manageable, its effects on daily life and your available supports. A physician can assess associated sleep, mood and physical concerns.

Support Options

Support may include practical coping strategies, bereavement resources or counselling. Persistent difficulties or another condition such as depression may need additional assessment and care.

When to Act

If grief brings thoughts of suicide, call or text 988. Call 911 if your safety is immediately at risk. Seek prompt help if you cannot manage basic daily needs.

Discuss Grief With a Physician

Walk In connects eligible patients in its service areas with BC-licensed physicians for phone or video appointments. The physicians provide the medical care.

MSP-covered visits are free for eligible patients.

Understanding Grief

Grief is a natural response to loss, including bereavement and major life changes. Feelings can shift or return unexpectedly. There is no single correct sequence or timetable, and needing support does not mean you are grieving incorrectly.

Support and Next Steps

The aim is to support your health and ability to cope, rather than to remove normal grief. A physician can help distinguish grief from conditions needing specific treatment and discuss appropriate resources when distress is persistent or difficult to manage.

Your Appointment in Three Steps

Step 1 Book Your Visit

Choose a service and review the eligible location and care requirements before selecting an available appointment.

Step 2 Speak With a Doctor

Connect by phone or video. Your doctor may need video or an in-person assessment to understand your concern.

Step 3 Plan Your Next Steps

Your doctor will discuss a care plan. Prescriptions, notes, tests and referrals depend on the assessment and clinical need.

Questions About Grief

How Do I Know Whether My Grief Needs Additional Support?

There is no single timetable or correct way to grieve. Feelings may come in waves and become more intense around reminders or anniversaries. Support can be useful whenever coping becomes difficult, especially when sleep, nutrition, work or relationships are being substantially affected.

A physician can listen to how grief is affecting your health and help distinguish expected grief reactions from concerns such as depression or another condition needing treatment. You do not need a diagnosis or a particular amount of time to have passed before asking for help.

Can Grief Cause Physical Symptoms?

Grief can affect sleep, appetite, energy and concentration and can be accompanied by physical tension or stomach symptoms. These effects are real, but a new or persistent physical problem should not automatically be explained by bereavement. Your medical history and the nature of the symptom still matter.

A physician can assess the health concern and discuss practical support for eating, sleeping and managing daily responsibilities. Severe chest pain, fainting or significant breathing difficulty needs urgent assessment, regardless of the emotional circumstances around it.

What Help Can I Get if I Do Not Want Medication?

An appointment can focus on understanding what is most difficult, identifying support and discussing grief counselling, bereavement groups or other appropriate resources. Practical needs such as disrupted sleep, difficulty eating or a related medical problem can be addressed without treating grief itself as a disorder to erase.

Medication may be considered for a separate condition when appropriate, but it is not the only reason to seek care. Tell the physician what kind of help would feel useful and whether you have existing family, community or counselling support.
