How an Online Doctor Can Help With Fever

Assessment, care options and when to seek help.

Assessment

Review temperature readings, duration, accompanying symptoms and recent travel or medicines. Fever is a sign to interpret in context, rather than a diagnosis by itself.

Care Options

A physician can assess possible causes and advise on suitable symptom relief, testing or an examination. The goal is to address the cause as well as discomfort.

When to Act

Seek urgent care for fever with severe headache, a stiff neck, confusion, breathing difficulty or rapid deterioration. Get prompt advice if your immunity is reduced. Call 911 if seriously unwell.

Discuss Fever With a Physician

Walk In connects eligible patients in its service areas with BC-licensed physicians for phone or video appointments. The physicians provide the medical care.

MSP-covered visits are free for eligible patients.

Understanding Fever

In adults, a temperature of about 38°C or higher is commonly considered a fever. Infection is a frequent cause, but other illnesses and medicines can also raise temperature. This guide focuses on adult fever.

Care and Treatment

Rest and adequate fluids may help while the cause is assessed. Fever-reducing medicines can improve comfort but do not establish why you are ill. Persistent or worsening fever deserves reassessment.

Questions About Fever

How Do I Know Whether a Fever Needs Urgent Attention?

The temperature is only one part of the picture. Breathing difficulty, confusion, a severe headache with neck stiffness, a concerning new rash or signs of dehydration can make an illness urgent even if the fever is not especially high. Your medical history also matters.

Tell the physician if you are pregnant, immunocompromised or receiving treatment such as chemotherapy, because you may need a different plan. This guide concerns adults; fever advice for babies and children follows different assessment thresholds.

If Fever Medicine Helps, Does That Mean the Illness Is Not Serious?

No. A fever may come down temporarily with medication in both mild and more serious illnesses. Feeling better after a dose can improve comfort, but it does not identify the cause or rule out a complication.

A physician considers the whole illness: how long it has lasted, where other symptoms are occurring, your hydration and whether you are improving between doses. Follow the product instructions and check for duplicate ingredients in cold remedies rather than taking extra medicine to chase a normal number.

What If My Fever Persists or Keeps Returning?

A fever that is not settling, returns after improvement or has no clear explanation deserves a review. Relevant clues include cough, urinary symptoms, abdominal pain, recent travel, new medicines and exposure to other people who are ill. Keep a record of measured temperatures and associated symptoms.

A physician can use that pattern to decide whether an examination or targeted tests are needed. Seek help sooner if you are deteriorating, have significant underlying illness or develop concerning symptoms rather than waiting for a particular number of days.
