What Should I Do if My Glucose Readings Are Higher Than Usual?
Look for a pattern and note possible contributors such as illness, missed medication, steroid treatment or changes in eating and activity. A physician can review those details alongside your usual readings and diabetes treatment. Do not make large unplanned medication changes based on one result.
If you have a sick-day or ketone-testing plan, follow it. Vomiting, abdominal pain, rapid breathing, confusion or severe dehydration can indicate an emergency, particularly in someone who needs insulin, and should not wait for a routine appointment.
Can I Discuss Diabetes Medication Side Effects or Repeated Low Readings?
Yes. Bring the medication names, doses and glucose records, including when symptoms occur in relation to meals, activity and treatment. Different diabetes medicines have different risks, and recurrent low readings can require prompt adjustment of the plan.
A physician can assess the pattern and coordinate appropriate follow-up. Follow your existing low-glucose treatment instructions if symptoms occur. Severe confusion, seizures or inability to swallow safely is an emergency; a person in that situation needs immediate help rather than food or drink by mouth.
What Does Routine Diabetes Follow-Up Include Beyond an A1C Test?
Diabetes follow-up considers day-to-day glucose patterns, blood pressure, kidney health, cholesterol, medication effects and screening for eye and foot problems. The schedule depends on your type of diabetes, treatment and other health conditions. A single reassuring A1C does not replace all of these checks.
A physician can help address a focused concern and identify overdue monitoring. Bring recent results and confirm who will arrange ongoing tests, examinations and follow-up so the plan is coordinated with your regular diabetes-care clinician.
