How Is Irritant Dermatitis Different From Allergic Contact Dermatitis?
Irritant dermatitis happens when something damages the skin barrier, such as repeated handwashing, cleaning products or friction. Allergic contact dermatitis is an immune reaction to a substance you have become sensitive to, such as a fragrance, preservative or metal. They can look similar, but identifying the cause changes prevention advice.
A physician can review where the rash appears, your work and skincare exposures, and the timing of flares. A product you have used for years can still become relevant to an allergy assessment.
What If I Cannot Identify What Is Triggering My Rash?
A record of products, gloves, jewellery, workplace exposures and when the rash improves or worsens can reveal patterns. Photographs from different stages can also help. Avoid changing many products at once, because that can make the trigger harder to identify.
A physician can review likely causes and treatment response. Recurrent or persistent suspected allergic contact dermatitis may warrant patch testing or a dermatology referral. Patch testing investigates delayed skin reactions and is different from testing for immediate food or pollen allergies.
Can I Use the Same Steroid Cream on Every Area of Dermatitis?
The right strength and duration depend on the body area, severity and diagnosis. Thin or sensitive skin, including the face and skin folds, needs particular care. A cream prescribed for a thick patch on the hand may not be appropriate elsewhere.
A physician can explain where and how long to use treatment, along with moisturising and trigger avoidance. Seek advice if the rash is painful, spreading, crusting or failing to improve, because infection or a different diagnosis may require another approach.
