How an Online Doctor Can Help With COPD

A focused review of symptoms, treatment and next steps.

Health Review

Compare current breathing, cough and mucus with your baseline. Review inhalers, prior flare-ups and existing lung-function results.

Care Options

A physician can review treatment concerns and whether an examination, testing or a change in your care plan is needed. COPD also requires continuing follow-up with your regular care team.

When to Act

Seek prompt assessment for increased breathlessness, fever or a significant change in cough. Call 911 for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, marked confusion or inability to speak normally.

Discuss COPD With a Physician

Walk In connects eligible patients in its service areas with BC-licensed physicians for phone or video appointments. The physicians provide the medical care.

MSP-covered visits are free for eligible patients.

Understanding COPD

COPD is a long-term lung condition that limits airflow. It includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Symptoms may gradually change, with periods of more sudden worsening called exacerbations.

Care and Treatment

Care may include inhalers, smoking-cessation support and pulmonary rehabilitation. Treatment is individualized; not every flare needs the same medicine. Oxygen and complex exacerbation management require appropriate assessment and monitoring.

Your Appointment in Three Steps

Step 1 Book Your Visit

Choose a service and review the eligible location and care requirements before selecting an available appointment.

Step 2 Speak With a Doctor

Connect by phone or video. Your doctor may need video or an in-person assessment to understand your concern.

Step 3 Plan Your Next Steps

Your doctor will discuss a care plan. Prescriptions, notes, tests and referrals depend on the assessment and clinical need.

Questions About COPD

How Can I Tell Whether My COPD Is Flaring Up?

A sustained change from your usual breathing, cough or sputum can signal an exacerbation. The important comparison is with your normal day-to-day symptoms. Infections are one possible trigger, but other heart or lung problems can also cause deterioration and may need different treatment.

A physician can review the change and your existing action plan to decide what assessment or treatment is needed. Marked breathlessness, confusion, chest pain or difficulty managing usual activities because of breathing symptoms warrants more urgent care.

Will Every COPD Flare Need Antibiotics or Steroid Tablets?

No. Treatment depends on the severity and pattern of symptoms, likely cause and your medical history. Antibiotics and oral steroids have specific roles and risks; they are not automatically appropriate whenever coughing increases. An examination may be needed to assess the change.

If you have a written rescue plan, follow its instructions and arrange the recommended review. A physician can check whether that plan still fits your circumstances. Avoid using leftover treatment without advice, especially when symptoms differ from previous flare-ups.

What Can I Review if My COPD Inhalers Are Becoming Difficult to Use?

Bring the names of all inhalers and describe the difficulty: coordinating a breath, operating the device, remembering doses or experiencing side effects. The device and technique matter as much as the prescription name. A pharmacist or clinician can help assess whether you are receiving the medicine effectively.

A physician can also review symptom control and whether the treatment combination remains suitable. Ongoing COPD care includes more than refills, such as exacerbation prevention, smoking support where relevant and appropriate pulmonary rehabilitation or specialist input.
