How an Online Doctor Can Help With Constipation

Assessment, care options and when to seek help.

Assessment

Review your usual bowel pattern, recent changes, medicines and any bleeding or pain. Persistent or unexplained symptoms may need an examination or tests.

Care Options

Discuss gradual fibre changes, fluids, activity and whether a laxative is suitable. A physician can also review medicines that may be contributing.

When to Act

Seek urgent assessment for severe abdominal pain, vomiting, marked swelling or inability to pass gas. New rectal bleeding or unexplained weight loss needs medical review.

Discuss Constipation With a Physician

Walk In connects eligible patients in its service areas with BC-licensed physicians for phone or video appointments. The physicians provide the medical care.

MSP-covered visits are free for eligible patients.

Understanding Constipation

Constipation can mean infrequent bowel movements, hard stools or difficulty emptying the bowel. Diet, routines and medicines can contribute, but a new or persistent change should not automatically be attributed to lifestyle.

Care and Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause and your health history. Gradual changes often help, while some people need medicine or further investigation. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own because you think it is causing constipation.

Questions About Constipation

What If More Fibre and Water Have Not Helped My Constipation?

Persistent constipation needs a closer look at the bowel pattern, medicines and any difficulty actually passing stool. Increasing fibre indefinitely is not always helpful, particularly if it worsens bloating. A physician can consider whether a laxative, a different approach or investigation of an underlying cause would be more useful.

Bring the names of products you have tried and describe their effect. Severe abdominal pain, vomiting, marked swelling or inability to pass gas needs urgent assessment rather than adding more constipation treatments.

Is It Safe to Use a Laxative Regularly?

Some people need ongoing laxative treatment, but the choice and duration should fit the cause of their constipation. Different products work differently, and taking several without a plan can cause cramping, diarrhea or other problems. Needing treatment regularly is a useful reason to review the bowel pattern with a clinician.

A physician can help establish a plan, including when to adjust treatment and when to reassess. Mention kidney disease, pregnancy and other medicines before choosing a product.

When Does a Change in Bowel Habits Need Investigation?

An unexplained change that persists, keeps recurring or comes with blood in the stool, weight loss or ongoing abdominal pain deserves assessment. These symptoms should not automatically be attributed to diet or hemorrhoids. Your age, family history and previous screening also help guide the next steps.

A physician may review medications, arrange targeted tests or recommend an examination or referral. Keeping a short record of stool frequency, consistency and associated symptoms can make that assessment more useful.
