How an Online Doctor Can Help With Bronchitis

Assessment, care options and when to seek help.

Assessment

Review the cough's duration, fever, breathing symptoms and existing lung conditions. A physician may advise a chest examination or testing to assess other causes.

Care Options

Acute bronchitis is commonly viral. Care often focuses on rest and symptom relief; antibiotics are considered only when the assessment supports a bacterial infection or another indication.

When to Act

Seek prompt assessment for coughing blood, chest pain or worsening breathlessness. Call 911 for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, or confusion.

Discuss Bronchitis With a Physician

Walk In connects eligible patients in its service areas with BC-licensed physicians for phone or video appointments. The physicians provide the medical care.

MSP-covered visits are free for eligible patients.

Understanding Bronchitis

Acute bronchitis is inflammation of the larger airways, often following a respiratory infection. The cough can continue after other symptoms improve. Chronic bronchitis is a different, longer-term problem commonly associated with COPD.

Care and Treatment

Fluids, rest and avoiding smoke may help recovery. Review suitable symptom treatments with a physician or pharmacist. A cough that persists, worsens or repeatedly returns should be reassessed rather than repeatedly self-treated.

Questions About Bronchitis

Why Are Antibiotics Often Not Helpful for Bronchitis?

Most uncomplicated acute bronchitis is caused by a virus. Antibiotics do not treat the virus and can cause side effects, so a chesty cough or coloured phlegm alone is not a reason to prescribe them.

The useful question is whether your symptoms fit bronchitis or suggest another problem, such as pneumonia or a flare of an existing lung condition. A physician reviews your breathing, fever, illness pattern and risk factors to decide whether an examination, testing or a different treatment is needed.

How Long Can a Bronchitis Cough Last?

The cough can last several weeks because the airways remain irritated after the initial infection improves. Gradual improvement is more reassuring than an exact day count. A cough that is getting worse, returns with fever or substantially limits breathing needs another assessment.

Tell the physician if you also have asthma or COPD, smoke, or take medicines that affect your immune system. These details can change the threshold for an examination and the advice about symptom relief and follow-up.

What Can Help While a Bronchitis Cough Settles?

Rest, fluids and avoiding smoke or vaping can make an irritated cough easier to manage. Cough medicines have limitations and may interact with other treatments, so a pharmacist or physician can help choose a suitable option if symptoms are disrupting sleep.

Wheezing or chest tightness deserves specific attention, particularly if you have asthma. A physician can assess whether treatment for airway narrowing is appropriate; an inhaler is not automatically useful for every bronchitis cough.
