Is the Swelling From a Bite an Allergic Reaction or an Infection?
Itching, redness and swelling can be a local inflammatory reaction, especially when they develop soon after a bite or sting. Swelling alone does not mean that antibiotics are needed. Increasing pain, spreading warmth or redness, pus, fever or feeling unwell makes infection more concerning.
A physician can review the timing and progression, photographs and your medical history. Rapidly worsening symptoms need prompt assessment. Trouble breathing, throat swelling or faintness after a sting is an emergency, even if the skin reaction looks small.
What Information Helps After a Tick Bite?
The location where the bite happened, when the tick was removed and how long it may have been attached help assess risk. Keep a photograph of the tick and the skin if available, and mention any new expanding rash, fever, headache or unusual fatigue.
Preventive antibiotics are appropriate only in particular circumstances and are time sensitive. A physician can assess the exposure and whether treatment, observation or further advice is appropriate. Do not wait for a rash if you are seeking advice about prevention.
What Can Help an Itchy Bite That Is Not Infected?
Gentle cleaning, a cool compress and avoiding scratching can reduce irritation. Depending on the location and your health history, a pharmacist or physician may suggest an antihistamine or a suitable topical treatment. Scratched or broken skin needs extra care because it can become infected.
Arrange a review if the reaction is unusually large, persists or interferes with sleep or daily activities. A new painful or spreading rash should be reassessed rather than repeatedly treated as simple itching.
