How an Online Doctor Can Help With Anxiety
Understanding your concerns, exploring support and knowing when to seek urgent help.
Understanding
Discuss the pattern of worry, physical symptoms, sleep and effects on daily activities. A physician can also consider medicines, substances or health conditions that may contribute.
Support Options
Care may include counselling, practical coping strategies and medication when appropriate. Discuss your preferences, previous treatment and how symptoms will be followed up.
When to Act
Do not assume new chest pain or severe breathing difficulty is anxiety; seek emergency care. For thoughts of suicide, call or text 988. Call 911 if your safety is immediately at risk.
Discuss Anxiety With a Physician
Walk In connects eligible patients in its service areas with BC-licensed physicians for phone or video appointments. The physicians provide the medical care.
MSP-covered visits are free for eligible patients.
Understanding Anxiety
Anxiety can be a normal response to uncertainty. Persistent, overwhelming worry or repeated panic can interfere with work, sleep and relationships. An assessment considers both emotional and physical symptoms without assuming they all have the same cause.
Support and Next Steps
Psychological therapies and medicines can help with anxiety disorders. The approach depends on the symptoms and your circumstances. A focused appointment can help identify next steps; an ongoing care plan may involve your regular clinician and a mental health professional.

Questions About Anxiety
How Can I Tell Whether Physical Symptoms Are Anxiety or Something Else?
Anxiety can cause palpitations, chest tightness, sweating, stomach upset and a feeling of breathlessness. Those symptoms can also have physical causes, so a new or changing symptom should not automatically be labelled anxiety. Timing, triggers, medicines and associated symptoms help guide the assessment.
A physician can review the pattern and decide whether an examination or targeted tests would be useful. Severe chest pain, fainting or significant breathing difficulty needs urgent assessment rather than waiting to see whether calming down resolves it.
What Options Are There if I Do Not Want Anxiety Medication?
An appointment can focus on understanding the pattern and discussing counselling, psychological therapies and practical changes that fit your circumstances. Cognitive behavioural approaches can help some people respond differently to anxious thoughts and avoidance. Sleep, caffeine, alcohol and other factors may also be relevant.
A physician can help identify appropriate supports and discuss referral when needed. Medication is one option to consider, not a requirement for asking for help. Explain what you have tried and what you hope to manage better in daily life.
What Should I Expect if I Start Medication for Anxiety?
The expected benefit, timing and side effects depend on the medicine chosen. Some treatments work gradually and need follow-up to assess whether they are helping; they are not immediate solutions to every episode of anxiety. Your other medicines and medical history affect the choice.
Ask who will monitor treatment, when to review progress and what symptoms should prompt earlier contact. A physician can explain how to manage side effects and make changes safely. Avoid abruptly stopping a regular medication without advice, particularly after ongoing use.
