How an Online Doctor Can Help With Anemia

A focused review of symptoms, treatment and next steps.

Health Review

Review blood counts, iron studies, symptoms and possible blood loss. A physician can consider the type of anemia and whether further tests or an examination are needed.

Care Options

Treatment depends on the cause. Iron, vitamin replacement or another approach may be appropriate, with follow-up testing to assess the response.

When to Act

Seek urgent care for significant bleeding, black stools or worsening breathlessness. Call 911 for chest pain with serious illness, fainting or severe breathing difficulty.

Discuss Anemia With a Physician

Walk In connects eligible patients in its service areas with BC-licensed physicians for phone or video appointments. The physicians provide the medical care.

MSP-covered visits are free for eligible patients.

Understanding Anemia

Anemia occurs when the blood's oxygen-carrying capacity is reduced. Iron deficiency is one cause, but vitamin deficiencies, chronic illness, blood loss and other disorders can also contribute. Finding the cause matters as much as correcting the result.

Care and Treatment

A physician can review whether supplements are appropriate and how to monitor them. Do not assume that all anemia needs iron. Ongoing blood loss or an unexplained abnormal result may need further investigation.

Questions About Anemia

Does Low Hemoglobin Always Mean I Need Iron Supplements?

No. Iron deficiency is one cause of anemia, but vitamin deficiencies, inflammation, kidney disease, blood loss and other conditions can also contribute. The hemoglobin result shows that anemia is present; it does not establish the cause by itself.

A physician can review the blood count, relevant iron studies and your history before recommending treatment. Mention heavy periods, digestive symptoms, dietary restrictions and any bleeding. Taking iron without clarifying the cause may leave the underlying problem unaddressed and can cause unnecessary side effects.

Why Is Finding the Cause of Iron Deficiency Important?

Replacing iron can improve the deficiency, but it is also important to understand why it developed. Low intake, difficulty absorbing iron and ongoing blood loss need different follow-up. The appropriate investigation depends on factors such as age, menstrual history, digestive symptoms and medications.

A physician can explain whether additional tests or referral are needed alongside treatment. Improvement in fatigue or a blood result does not automatically mean the reason for the deficiency has been resolved, particularly if it returns after treatment stops.

What If Iron Treatment Upsets My Stomach or My Blood Count Is Not Improving?

Tell the clinician which product you take, how you take it and what side effects occur. Tolerance, absorption, missed doses and ongoing blood loss can all affect progress. A physician can review whether the formulation, schedule or treatment approach needs to change rather than simply advising you to take more.

Follow-up blood tests help assess response and whether further investigation is needed. The timing should be planned with the treating clinician. Chest pain, fainting or significant breathlessness needs prompt assessment rather than waiting for routine blood work.
