How an Online Doctor Can Help With Allergies
Assessment, care options and when to seek help.
Assessment
Describe possible triggers, timing and previous reactions. A physician can review whether your symptoms suggest an allergy and whether testing or specialist advice would help.
Care Options
Discuss trigger avoidance and options such as antihistamines or nasal treatments. The appropriate plan depends on the type of reaction and your medical history.
When to Act
Call 911 for throat or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty or collapse. Use your prescribed epinephrine auto-injector as directed if you suspect anaphylaxis. Do not wait for an appointment.
Discuss Allergies With a Physician
Walk In connects eligible patients in its service areas with BC-licensed physicians for phone or video appointments. The physicians provide the medical care.
MSP-covered visits are free for eligible patients.
Understanding Allergies
Allergies occur when the immune system reacts to a substance such as pollen, an animal, a food or a medicine. Reactions range from local irritation to a medical emergency; a previous mild reaction does not make every future reaction mild.
Care and Treatment
An assessment starts with the pattern of symptoms and exposure. Tests are chosen for a specific clinical question. Persistent or severe reactions may need an allergy specialist and an individual management plan.

Questions About Allergies
What If Antihistamines Are Not Controlling My Allergies?
A physician can review which symptoms are still troublesome, the product you are using and how consistently you take it. A tablet that helps itching and sneezing may do less for a blocked nose, so treatment may need to target the nose or eyes more directly.
Depending on your symptoms, options may include a nasal spray, eye drops or a different medication. Persistent symptoms, wheezing or a suspected serious allergy may warrant further investigation or specialist referral.
How Can I Tell Seasonal Allergies From a Cold?
Itchy eyes or nose, repeated sneezing and symptoms that recur around pollen, pets or another exposure suggest allergies. A cold is more likely to involve a sore throat, feeling generally unwell and symptoms that change over several days. Neither pattern is conclusive on its own.
Tell the physician when symptoms started, whether they recur in the same season and what happens when you leave the suspected trigger. That history helps distinguish allergies from infection and other causes of nasal symptoms.
When Is Allergy Testing Useful?
Testing is most useful when there is a specific suspected trigger and the result would change avoidance advice or treatment. It is not automatically needed for straightforward seasonal symptoms. A physician can assess whether targeted testing or an allergist referral would help, particularly after a concerning food, medication or sting reaction.
A positive result does not always mean that an exposure causes your symptoms. Results need to be interpreted alongside your reaction history; broad screening panels can create confusion and unnecessary restrictions.
